Women’s cycling has grown to to the point where we would like to offer a tour suited to those that like to take it a bit easier, yet still want to take on a challenge. We designed the Women’s Cycling Tour so that our riders can all enjoy a few more of the sights and surrounds and it is suited to those who probably don’t want to ride big distances and descend big mountains at crazy speeds. With this in mind, we’ve decided to provide the ladies with their own tour, as we understand it is challenging sometimes to find that balance with mixed groups. The Women’s cycling tour will no doubt be a challenge, but what better than to share this amazing cycling experience with a group of friends who are just as passionate about cycling as you are.

Ride with us on this exclusive tour as we delve deep into the vibrant Japan culture and tackle some of the best, yet mostly undiscovered cycling in the world. After gathering in Nagano, we will travel deep into the Mountains surrounding this ancient and majestic region. The contrast will amaze, as will the next 7 days of cycling that lay head as we visit hot springs, see majestic snow Monkeys, visit ancient temples and taste delicious local produce.

The tour also includes entry into the Azumino Alps Century Ride, one of Japan’s great GranFondo which takes riders on a stunning course through the alps. Contact us today for more details. Website http://aacr.jp/ (Japanese Only)

With breathtaking scenery, challenging riding and plenty of off-bike experiences to enjoy as well, the stage is set for a uniquely rewarding cycling holiday – one you and your legs will remember for a long time to come.

Day 1

Matsumoto (20km/500m)

Welcome to Matsumoto, a cycling paradise in the heart of the Japan Alps. Matsumoto is our base for a few nights and with its mix of traditional and modern, it will be sure to deliver a lot of unique experiences, both on and off the bike. After arriving, briefing and logistics we will head out for a short ride to visit the castle and some other local sights before meeting for our first dinner.

Day 2

Matsumoto (55km/700m)

For our first ride, we head south along one of the many mountain rivers that populate the area. We will visit SkyPark and then take in some of the beautiful farming roads south of the city before a stop at Kutsuzawa Lake. The road back has a few hills to test the legs before we arrive back for lunch and a well deserved coffee and cake.

Day 3

Matsumoto (60km/1000m)

Another great day as we explore the hills and small mountain roads to the north of Matsumoto. We climb gently out of the city, looking back to take in the superb views, before making our way to Akashina on the gently rolling rice field roads. Our first major climb takes us up to an amazing lookout, where we start to get feel of the size of the mountains. After our descent we head for Matsumoto with a few small hills.

Day 4

Lake Shirakaba - Fujinomiya (44km/1100m)

Today will be spend exploring the vineyards of Matsumoto. Japan is a developing wine producer and is now starting to make some good quality white and sweeter reds. We will stop and taste some the local offerings and spend the ride rolling through the tiny little roads perched on the side of the slopes. Think Alsace. We will then head up to Lake Mizuzuko for a look at the stunning mountain lake 1000m above sea level. A nice descent and we finish the ride with an onsen in Asama.

Day 5

Hakuba (100km/1600m)

A stunning 100km course that takes us on the beautiful roads of Azumino as we head for Hakuba, our next location on the tour. We will take our time and soak up the wonderful atmosphere along the road, before calling it a day in the ski resort town and as always a great coffee and muffin.

Day 6

Hakuba (45km/1000m)

Hakuba is famous for its winter activities and today we will explore the stunning valley. Home to the 1998 Winter Olympics, Hakuba has some infrastructure that is still in use and we will visit the mighty ski jumping venue. Our course takes us the the European styling of Cortina, before we make our journey back to our relaxing accommodation. Naturally, coffee and cake will be had.

Day 7

Nagano (61km/1300m)

Our last day on the bike and today we say Sayonnara to Hakuba and head toward our final destination, Nagano. A great course through the hills today with a bit of climbing to keep the legs honest as we head up to the ancient temple of Togakushi. We finish with a great descent into Nagano and will finish the tour at Zenkoji Temple, a 1600year old Buddhist icon.

Day 8

Deaprt Nagano

More about Hakuba Discover Hakuba

Hakuba (白馬), located in the Northern Alps of Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan's most popular ski areas, offering good snow and several large ski resorts to choose from. During the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, Hakuba gained world wide recognition as it hosted several olympic competitions, including alpine (downhill, super g, and combination) and nordic (ski jump and cross country) events. Today some of the olympic facilities remain in use, such as the Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium. There is also the Hakuba Olympic Village Memorial Hall, a small but interesting museum, located within walking distance of the ski jump.

More about Matsumoto Discover Matsumoto

Matsumoto (松本) is the second largest city in Nagano Prefecture. It is most famous for Matsumotojo, one of Japan’s most beautiful original castles. The city is also a good base for trips into the Japanese Alps, e.g. to Kamikochi, Norikura or the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. Matsumoto Castle, is the city’s must-see attraction and is among Japan’s oldest fortresses. Together with Himeji Castle, Hikone Castle and Inuyama Castle, the building is designated as a National Treasure. Matsumoto’s black, wooden keep (donjon) is the oldest such structure in Japan, dating from 1595. The black paint gave the castle its nickname “Karasujo” (Crow Castle) and the dark color was designed to terrorize approaching opponents. Matsumoto Castle is built on level ground and this has a wide moat as its primary means of defense.

More about Nagano Discover Nagano

Nagano City (長野) is the capital of Nagano Prefecture. It evolved as a temple town around Zenkoji, one of Japan’s most popular temples. In 1998, the city hosted the Winter Olympic Games, and some former olympic facilities can still be viewed around town. In the forested mountains northwest of the city center lies the Togakushi area which attracts tourists with its popular shrines and as the legendary home of the Togakure Ninja School. The Togakushi Ninpo Museum and the Kids Ninja Village provide good entertainment and a glimpse of the area’s ninja past.
