Mountain BikesBMC TE01 XX1

When you want a World-Cup ready cross-country bike, but don’t want to lose mental energy worrying about your suspension or gears, the BMC Teamelite TE01 makes it easy as possible to get on the trail with a hard tail that has suspension built in and gearing that is wide ranging without a front derailleur. They offers this TE01 with SRAM’s XX1 drive train.

One chain ring, a 30-tooth ring, eleven cogs, 10-42, and you’ve got a well-spaced wide range that saves weight and keeps things straightforward. The chain runs up and down the cassette with the X-actuation trigger shifter mounted to the rear brake lever. Crisp, light shifts, with no slop or friction loss. The brakes are from the SRAM family as well, Avid’s X01, a superlight two-piston cross-country brake. The rotors are 180mm in the front for power and 160mm in the rear for modulation.

One of the great things about the TE01 is how it marries light weight to a frame that offers great vertical compliance without being a noodle when it’s time to apply torque. 990g in the Medium size, this formed feather gives the nimble ride of 26-inch wheels and the comfort of full-suspension. They developed their Big Wheel Concept (BWC) to tame the wheels and make the bike agile, and they adapted their Tuned Compliance Concept (TCC) to combine lateral stiffness that benefits steering, tracking, and power transfer with vertical compliance that takes away many of the bumps. And BMC was able to work in some nifty design ideas as well: like the 1 1/8″ to 1 1/2″ tapered steerer to the BB90 bottom bracket, integrated chain protection both above and behind the crank, and replaceable, integrated post mounts.

The fork is Fox’s 32 Float CTD Remote with 100mm of travel. The stanchions have the slick Kashima coating for long-term friction-free movement, which adds durability and reduces maintenance. The remote has three settings (climb, trail, descend) at your fingertips, which are precision tuning for a damping system that has already been highly refined. And the wheel is secured via a thru-axle to add to the system’s rigidity.

The wheels are DT/Swiss’s XR 1501 Spline ONE. This cross-country racing wheelset weighs in at 1510g, with durable aluminum tubeless-ready rims, and smooth-running long-lasting DT/Swiss hubs. As you should assume, the hubs and rims are joined with DT/Swiss double-butted straight-pull spokes. It rolls on Continental Race King 2.2 Race Sport tires, a foldable racing tire optimized for hardpack, but can hold its own elsewhere.

The Naked Carbon frameset is finished with A Fizik Tundra 2 saddle, and a BMC stem mated to BMC carbon-fiber handlebars.

The BMC Teamelite TE01 XX1 is the cross-country race bike that is easy to pedal because not only is it light and efficient, but they’ve put in engineering that does much of the thinking for you.
